Because of this, one of two things has to be true. It can't be neither. 1) Apple's review process doesn't work, because they shipped an obviously unsafe app that could steal your Amazon data, or 2) Apple's decisions about apps aren't actually based on user safety like they claim.https://twitter.com/verge/status/1416146423863783424 …

Apple's primary defense for user safety is their sandboxing. App store review is hit or miss and is a mechanism for them to exert power over apps on their platform.

At the same time Apple was attacked by various high profile devs for their strict content policies. Some people attack them for checking the apps, some for not checking enough.

Actually I think what they are being attacked for more broadly is their duplicity. They exert a lot of platform control in the name of security, but do not actually provide that security, so people who want either are both rightfully upset with Apple.

How much do you think they can spend reviewing each app out of millions? They certainly try to check stuff like trademark infringement or kid-friendliness, but this is likely done with outsourced labor by people who may barely know English. Do you think this can be automated?

I don't care what they do. They just should be honest. If they aren't going to spend any time reviewing apps, they should say that they're doing it for security. Because it's insecure. They're welcome to say something else.

Like maybe Apple's ads can say, "The Apps on the AppStore probably aren't secure for a while. But once more people use them, if we find out their insecure, we'll remove them. That's our promise to you: your apps are insecure for a while, and then they disappear."

Then Apple will be only big company in the world with truthful ads.

Insecure compared to which other mobile platform? Yes they do spend time reviewing apps. Both myself and people I know couldn’t get submissions accepted due to possible infringement of 3rd party trademarks. Possible to obfuscate some fishing/tracking code? Yes, they aren’t gods.

For years they were relentlessly criticized for slow nitpicky reviews. Meanwhile the volume of submissions grew immensely and many of those are “free” apps that generate no income besides dev subscription. Guess they stopped caring that much.
