I’ve found certain payment processors used by large companies to have the most backward flaky systems... We’re talking still relying on the browser to redirect to a URL so that a payment is recorded. Don’t worry though!!!! It uses a hash to make sure folks don’t fake it!!!!

I think you vastly miscalculate the level of funding and project goals of engineering teams at payment and bank processors. Engineering is often a back office function for financial leadership. As such, it's not in the limelight, and does not get the big resources.

We did this when I ran security at Braintree, and I’m pretty sure they still do. While I can make an impassioned security argument for it, it definitely caused operational headaches. The CA ecosystem is not as clean as many people think.

I have been horrified at what I've found, personally - this is the first time I've done a server backend that handles payments. The security model of the web is not good.
