This is a great diagram from Anandtech (https://anandtech.com/show/16805/amd-threadripper-pro-review-an-upgrade-over-regular-threadripper/10 …). It uses color to show the relative cost of communicating between any two cores of a 64-core Threadripper. The physical layout of chips is becoming increasingly important to performance-oriented programming!pic.twitter.com/Urh1i0xHzs

I mean at 64 cores if your threads require communicating between each other enough for this to be an issue you probably didn't multithread the right way anyway

at 64 cores you may run several VMs each using 2 or 4 cores. And thus you need to take this into account in allocating physical cores to VMs

And never mind VMs - just processes themselves. There are clearly good and bad ways to allocate 8-thread processes, 16-thread processes, etc. among these 64 threads, right...

do we know if the OS is smart about this yet? It honestly doesn't seem like that hard of a problem, provided the OS knows how cores are clustered physically, which I *assume* it can know

threads need is dynamic, and there is also a cost in migrating threads between cores. You may also have meomry access costs (because cache structure)

I just mean if you start your program by immediately spawning 8 threads, is the OS gonna cluster them together on nearby cores or just plop them around randomly?

So this has already been an issue before with AMD, especially with original ThreadRipper where the memory bandwidth was very nonuniform. The goal, of course, is that kernels do get better over time at automatically assigning threads: https://www.anandtech.com/show/15483/amd-threadripper-3990x-review/3 …
