I’d add to all of this, branches *are* useful if you need to maintain multiple live versions of your software. That’s typically not the case for games, web things or (most) apps, but enterprise software, operating systems and so on do have that problem.

I agree with "just don't". The modern software landscape is dominated by decisions made by people who did a very bad job of cost/benefit analysis (or, usually, no analysis -- they just assume everything is all benefit, so, send it!)

And then by people following in their footsteps, who do not feel enough authority over computers to question or change any of these decisions, or don't even imagine a different way to do it. The only possibility is to keep doing the same thing, but more and more complicated.

I was going to ask what you think about Nix/NixOS, (because I usually cannot decide whether it's "institutionalized insanity" or "actually if you approach it like that, that could vindicate a poor axiom") But, I guess the above answers that question?

I sometimes consider switching to Linux, but get put off by the fact that most distros consider all software, including office programs and web browsers, to be on the same footing with "system packages" that require management by a package manager!
