People think tools programming is boring and easy and disconnected from the end product, but, having done it for five years (and since then 'on the side') A) You will have a massive impact on the end quality. B) If you can empathize, you'll *feel* that difference you're making.

One my my "side" projects was adding an ingame debug menu to Vermintide. One of my goals was to make it noob-friendly, not a "programmer-only" tool, so not a quake-console. UX and juicyness. I'm absolutely confident it gave the game at least a couple of its metacritic points.
