The best plot twist in this particular excuse parade is the excusemaker later saying that the hard problem to solve is if you "cat the wrong file or get a ridiculous output from a tool". Which is exactly what I demoed being very fast in refterm!https://twitter.com/roytries/status/1412457848676757505 …

Terminal has no problem rendering faster than you can read. The problem is how fast it can render a huge texts, for example if you cat the wrong file or get a ridiculous output from a tool. Because you have to wait for all of it to render before it becomes interactive again.

Roy: "You didn't solve the real problem." Me: "What is the real problem?" Roy: "Catting large files or large output from tools!" Me: "That's exactly the demo I showed myself solving!" Roy: "..." Just another BS day on Dev Twitter.

I’m late to the party, but why should terminal rendering slow down performance of the process outputting to stdout? Shouldn’t it just generate a correct rendering 60 times per second, each one reflecting the state of the output 1/60th of a second ago?

I think that's what Roy was trying to get at, that just having the windows terminal do that would be 'sufficient' to get a usable terminal. But obviously Casey showed that glyph caching speeds up rendering significantly and that it does not require some PhD-level of complexity.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not making more excuses for Microsoft 😅 I'm just trying to understand how Roy came to say the things he said.. I think he wanted to say that a poorly optimized terminal window would be perfectly usable if it flushed stdout as fast as Casey's refterm.

...even if that happens only at 10-20 fps due to slow text rendering, for example.

If he was trying to say that, why did he say that my demo "solves the wrong problem"? I solved all the problems, AFAIK, but Roy thought otherwise. When I asked which problems he thought I hadn't solved, he simply said he didn't know.

Yeah, I don't know.. Maybe he thought you *only* solved high framerate terminal rendering, but you clearly did way more, and even showed off the fast pipes demonstrating that Windows is way too slow here. I hope he'll get round to watching the entire video some day.. 😄

Well the reason this stuff pisses me off is because actually, _I didn't do way more_. The code I showed was unoptimized! What I was trying to show was not that I could write an amazing terminal, it was to show that _the laziest terminal code is 7000fps and cats huge files fast_.

The whole point of this endeavor is that actually the problem is trivial. It is the way people are programming that makes it appear slow. "Layout" and "rendering" or whatever else you think is slow is not slow at all, and it doesn't even require optimization to be fast!

The only reason I showed emoji and Unicode and Arabic and a 1gig file splat and all that was just so people _wouldn't_ keep saying the crap that Roy is saying, but he couldn't even be bothered to take the time to watch the video before adding to the garbage on Twitter. It sucks.

As I'll show next weekend, I _did_ then go and add literally like 20 lines of optimization to refterm after that demo. And guess what? IT GOT ANOTHER 10x FASTER. So like, I just don't even anymore. I just don't even. I should have been a mason like my grandfather.

Would you be ok with someone making a 10s video compilation of all of refterm's features and speed? Could filter out lots of low-effort dismissals
