I need to start giving out a prize for Leader of the Excuse Parade. The degree to which people feel compelled to contribute their completely uninformed opinion to technical threads, even when they have literally no idea what is happening, is off the charts.pic.twitter.com/JMP6iyEQyE

So many programmer-ish people do not understand what their computers are doing. But they learned some style of faking it, that is successful enough in most contexts, because everyone else is faking it too. They don't know the difference between that and the real thing...

I would not have believed that so many people would say "the problem is layout, that is hard" if I hadn't seen it...!

And refterm _DOES_ do layout? Like it does line wrapping, handles combining chars - I showed VT goto parsing... like what "layout" do they think is not happening that would be that much more difficult???

lines don't reflow on window resize properly in refterm, that's 3900FPS right there

These are great reasons why I continue to follow you both. I would sadly say I have been part of the excuse parade much of my career. You two helped open my eyes and I feel like I'm finally understanding what it truly means to be a programmer.

100% compliance of Unicode linebreak and other layout specs is actually “hard” because the spec is so absurd… I highly doubt windows term is compliant. I’ve done it, it blows. Maybe “hard” isn’t the right word, but it is time consuming.

yes, your terminal perfectly showed that in the video. What I really can't believe is that all this "excuses squad" people actually watched your video. I mean I get it if they don't understand without watching the video but otherwise it makes no sense

They probably didn't watch the video but saw one or two tweets and based their opinion on that.

I honestly didn't expect you'd go as far as rendering Arabic properly before watching the video. When you can render bidirectional text, layout is pretty much done.

There's still one more case to handle for Arabic/Hebrew/etc., but I'll try to get to it this weekend (it doesn't quite do the spacing properly at the moment).
