I guess if we go ahead and add ClearType calc to this, he gets a PhD? Or do I get a PhD if I add the ClearType calc? Who gets the PhD, @Microsoft? Is it both of us?

the one thing this is missing is support for ligatures and double width characters
-
Both of those are supported. You put them in the atlas and you split into two indexes.

So the thing is, I have met some people who were doing computer science doctoral research projects that were approximately as simple. So they may be right about this (but for the wrong reason).
-
Reminder that "PhD research" is usually done by someone in their 20s with no work experience.

I did this once after using OpenGL for 6 days, so I guess I'm a doctor now.

I‘ve encountered the “that would be a PhD project” defense several times in person, sometimes by actual PhDs. This mindset is everywhere. Is it so preposterous to suggest that programmers (sorry, software engineers) do some actual programming?

as the person who wrote the equivalent shader for PS4 back in 2011 or so (and at Unity, one that also does all of UNICODE in color) this is all very amusing.
-
don't listen to people who spin tales about UNICODE ligatures - in a character cell display, the only wrinkle introduced by UNICODE is that some chars (Chinese mostly) are two cells wide. this was done with success in the 80s on a VGA, no reason why we can't do it today
