I guess I should write one this weekend? I mean it is literally a pixel shader with two texture lookups - one for the packed cell data, and a dependent read for the ClearType coverage encoding. Where do I pick up my doctoral thesis? Do they have those in the break room on campus?

Never mind that people have already done many doctoral theses on this topic for proportional text, and they rasterize the curves themselves in the god damn pixel shader. Like there are orders-of-magnitude way more hard core text rasterizers out there in _many many publications_.

Handmade Terminal?

How can this not happen now.

Terminal isn't strictly monospace though, is it? Not that it makes it substantially more difficult, but you do need to do text layout.
-
If you know of a way to make Windows Terminal display proportional fonts, let me know. I have never seen that. You can have double-width codes I believe, but that is still the exact same problem, because the grid is always aligned.

How can they say it's an entire PhD and then say they aren't aware of the body of work around it? wat

I don't understand why we're still having problems with rendering text in 2021. *2021.* I thought it was figured out, it is, but somehow not.
-
When you are Microsoft, all problems get worse over time because of backwards compatibility. ClearType™ is a case in point; it's been effectively deprecated since 2013, but it still needs to be supported.
