some reflection stuff is slated for C++24 I just assume its gonna be so basic and low level so it can be completely useless until they make a new keyword entirely to "try" and do it right in C++27

C++ is a write-off. It's the COBOL of the 21st century. It'll be around for a long time due to legacy overhang, but it's such a POS it will be fully replaced for any new codebases as easly as this decade, I suspect.

rust seems to be taking off, I haven't looked that deeply into it yet but it definitely appears to be the closest anyone's gotten to "dethroning C++"

I can't say Rust looks promising, but the fact that anyone bothered to create it is. People needed to think "hey maybe we should write some languages where we don't assume you want an interpreter and a GC", and so now we're seeing that happen more, which is crucial.

yeah I mean every time I've looked into it I just get to the borrow checker stuff and every example is like "here's the 100 lines you need to appease the borrow checker to do this thing that would be a one liner in C". neat concepts I guess.

It's not a good language, pretty much period (NO I DO NOT NEED YOU TO COME HERE AND TELL ME ABOUT IT RUST PROGRAMMERS, THANK YOU). But I think the _trend_ is good, and there are lots of these sorts of languages being worked on now, so I'm hopefully we'll get something soon.

its weird but I think that like the only thing needed to have a language take off in the mainstream these days would be to have a pip-like package manager. I don't get why its only janky ass languages that have good package management.

Personally I think if you need a package manager you messed something up, because it means the thing is too unwieldy to begin with, but that is a separate issue :)

I am aware that they aren't perfect but its pretty nice to be able to do a 1-liner in the command line to get any library you want installed and configured for your project without having to do it manually, in a way that you could easily automate for new build environments

But like that's kind of the thing, right. None of those steps would exist if the language wasn't butt.

Like why is there any configuration at all? If the language was actually good, you'd just download the source, and it would work.

i mean you can do that with most of the languages that have a package manager, the package manager just makes it trivial. literally copy and paste a one liner in the command line and you get it. actually quicker than downloading from a website and placing the code in a folder

especially when dealing with libraries that depend on other libraries
