Is there any honest reason why Windows can't have a box you check that says "I certify that I am an actual adult who knows what a computer is" and then it turns off all the absolute garbage that they have stuffed in here, like Cortana, Microsoft accounts, forced updates, etc.?

It could be worth trying just bog-standard components? Intel NIC, nVidia GPU, Samsung NVMe, RealTek sound, you get the gist. If a certain device has a large userbase on linux, it's unlikely to have unworkable drivers.

The problem is that I cannot do that. I have to have things like PlayStation devkit, Behringer audio input, BlackMagic DeckLink, etc. I agree that Linux would probably be an OK choice if you don't really use any hardware with your computer. Just buy the most common machine, etc.
