Most banking, regulatory, and tax filings I do online now take significantly longer in terms of actual human hours to complete than if they had simply been done on paper. The promise of the "paperless office" was that things would go faster, and in fact we just made them slower.

This should be deeply embarrassing for everyone, because most of these things computers could do automatically. Instead, we have literally arrived at a place where a physical stamp would be faster because the "web form" nonsense people use often doesn't even support paste.

If you think the US tax filing system is bad for small businesses, you should try filing EU VAT. It is an epic unmitigated disaster.
