Most banking, regulatory, and tax filings I do online now take significantly longer in terms of actual human hours to complete than if they had simply been done on paper. The promise of the "paperless office" was that things would go faster, and in fact we just made them slower.

Web technologies seem like the best cherry and sprinkles on top of the messy complexity of the US tax filling system.
-
If you think the US tax filing system is bad for small businesses, you should try filing EU VAT. It is an epic unmitigated disaster.

Spot on. Another annoyance of mine is having to give the same damn information to multiple government agencies - surely they could centralise it some way.

In Sweden l, doing your taxes usually takes less than 5 minutes to do online. Because the IRS has all the info filled and you just accept if it is correct
-
Checking if it's correct is the time consuming part. The website my company uses for salary information can only be accessed on a 5 sec loading time, month-per-page, non-copyable list of numbers I have to manually add to an excel sheet.

It's because it's the web. I stick to using PDFs from the IRS and they're great. The moment you try to use web software for taxes and stuff, you've already lost.

Haven't you learned anything from the VS start-up times? This is solely because computers just aren't better, this has NOTHING to do with bad programming

I mean I'm pretty sure the paperless office bullshit is just an excuse to cut the number of workers in half and let the machines do it (?)
-
Give the web a few more years and they'll have to hire ten times as many workers as before just to do anything at all.
