I ask because I assume that the locus of concentration of the spike protein in the body would differ dramatically between a vaccine and COVID-19, so we wouldn't expect to see similar cells damaged, making it hard to guess what long-term symptoms to look for in study participants?

The spikes in the mRNA vaccines are altered so that they’re somewhat stuck in the non-active form. At first there were concerns about whether this would elicit effective antibodies, but it’s very clear now that the vaccines protect against covid-19 robustly.

@Ayjchan Right, but I am just wondering, has anyone actually demonstrated this in practice with an experiment? In other words, use mRNA-produced spike to repeat an experiments that showed cellular damage with the real spike, and demonstrated no damage? - Show replies
