I've come to think the web is driven by capitalism, not technology. Remote browsing as a service is obviously a technology regression. But it'll probably take off because of cashflows. Just like planned obsolescence.

You could even say it's the web industry's version of blocking the analog hole. I wouldn't be surprised if the two years went largely into figuring out how to track everything and how to replace ads on web sites with your own.
