On the developer ergonomics point ... I don't disagree with anything said, but I have to add, it is not the case that people are getting a lot in ergonomic benefit, on net, as they think they do. If this were actually happening, productivity would be much higher than it is.

So what happens is, people decide it's okay to trade off lots of performance for the *claim* that they are getting a benefit in terms of ease of development, but this claim is never evaluated. It just persists as a shared hallucination.

As painful as it is, I certainly agree that writing something substantial (a month of work or so) with as little external support in libraries as possible is a huge eye-opener for a lot of programmers.
-
I think that is the superpower a lot of us older coders have. Now, we HAD to do it, and it *sucked* - I have no romance about that era. But others can get the good bits 10% of that knowledge without the other 90% agonising pain.

Wouldn't you say namespaces were a good thing in C++ over C?
-
I would not. Namespaces are like most of C++'s features: they _could_ have been good, but they were designed poorly, so they aren't. Mostly all namespaces do at the moment is half-paper-over other poor design decisions in the rest of C++. I don't use them.

I had the pleasure of using bink library and I gotta say, it's really easy to use, a single header and lib file to import, no hassle whatsoever to integrate into our big code base. Written in classic C functions and no side effects crap, easy to understand
