Currently, without hardware acceleration available, it's like HEVC where it'll take longer because it is doing smarter things to make the encode more efficient

If it was the same speed for the same quality, and then took 10x longer to produce like 50% the file size, sure. But this is 10x slower than the slowest h.264 _no matter what you do_. There is no "fast" mode that goes the same speed.

My assumption was that AV1 is targeted at major streaming services more so than the average user -- especially considering how many of them contribute to the AOMedia working group.

But they already spend a lot of money on encoding, 5 to 10x-ing that cost may not be worth the bandwidth.
