The fact is that the monopoly AppStore is a _profit center_ for Apple. You can read all about it in their financial statements. There are many ways they could have done security or ease-of-use that don't involve monopolizing and controlling their users. They chose profit instead.
If you truly believe that the $64 billion/year in revenue Apple takes from developers via the (mandatory!) AppStore is just incidental to them, and they were just "doing it for the user", I guess I don't know what to say :(
