It's all pretty bad. In terms of rigor, "direct instruction" is very well researched. But educational methods are subtle, their impact is hard to quantify, it's all quite politicized, and many teachers are different, so it's hard to get anything rigorous done.

"Happy" to hear you say that, not because I'm not sad that the research isn't good, but because I'm glad to know it wasn't just me who was dismayed at the poor quality and the over-politicization.
