So, I read this entire post, but the entire thing just sums up to "we think someday we could make a context-free grammar for the universe". Since they _haven't_ yet, I'm not sure what the proposed value-add is here?https://twitter.com/stephen_wolfram/status/1250063808309198849 …

I never expected this: finally we may have a path to the fundamental theory of physics...and it's beautiful https://writings.stephenwolfram.com/2020/04/finally-we-may-have-a-path-to-the-fundamental-theory-of-physics-and-its-beautiful/ … pic.twitter.com/IVvx8F97SQ

Wolfram's syllogism: Automata make complicated things. Physics is a complicated thing. Therefore automata make physics.

To be a little more fair, Wolfram's actual contribution here is that some automata have rules that preserve invariants, akin to conservation laws/invariants in physics.

What I don't understand, and I'm going to have to read some of his material to find out, is why he thinks there's a puzzle to be solved with things like Lorentz invariance and energy. We know exactly what energy is and why it's conserved. Same with momentum, electric charge, etc.

The fundamental particle zoo is much more interesting, and I will be extremely intrigued if he makes any headway on that. Which is why I'm going to try to read it.

You may know this already, but just in case someone is reading along who doesn't, I'll briefly explain why I don't understand why Wolfram thinks (as he said in the blog post) that his model explains energy, because energy is not a big mystery. 1/n

Imagine for a moment that the entire universe is just a 1D line with two particles on it which move somehow. Then the "physics" of this system, any quantities you care about, are some function of how the particles are moving. 2/n
