I posted a video showing how bad Visual Studio's stepping speed had become. There were dismissive commenters who actually claimed it was because it has syntax highlighting. People are really that confused about computers. Meanwhile, this is 30fps:https://youtu.be/Oh2oF-eZTD8?t=484 …

The odd thing is Visual Studio does get a lot faster when I turn off syntax highlighting.
-
Of course it does! The entire thing is a pile! But the point is, that's not because syntax highlighting is expensive. It's because _everything_ in Visual Studio is orders of magnitude slower than it should be.

People see slow software and conclude hard problems. It's well past time to decouple these ideas. If it's being slow, just assume it's because it's bad, not doing something hard, and you'll be right 99% of the time.

The danger is when people know enough to think they are right, but not enough to know why they are wrong.
-
Also, about 10 minutes reading about VS plugin architecture may cause blindness and cold sweats. The question isn't why it's so slow, it's why it even runs at all.

1) It’s curious why folks are standing up for Microsoft developers and I think they are mistaking Casey’s ego for their own and reacting ad hominem (specifically regarding the Reddit thread).

2) "I am 'smart' because I am a software dev but am not quite 'smart' enough to be hired by Microsoft so the devs at Microsoft _must be *really*_ 'smart'. I've been using VS (and rationalizing its suck) for some amount of time so my worldview of me and Microsoft feels attacked."

3) The reality is it's the result of the Microsoft collective being questioned, which is a degenerative tool thrashed about by customers who pay them the most money to provide some feature/fix/change they want yesterday and probably does “mystical” things in _the cloud_.
