Given what I've heard from around the industry, it may also be that the "average programmer" doesn't live in the debugger to the same extent that they might have previously, so they just don't even notice. Certainly I've never noticed the lack of updates while stepping quickly.

Certainly in my own experience, automated testing (yes, even in the game industry!) and the type system being more feature-ful in recent C++ standards tends to cut down on the amount of debugging I do. Most of my debugging these days involves crash dumps and legacy code.
