This was just never an issue back in the day, because like I said, people today don't seem to understand that none of this stuff has to be slow. I'm not sure why they think it would be. Parsing + executing ~100 lines of code is instantaneous if done properly.

The fact that we've gotten to a point where the average programmer thinks somehow that should take a visible amount of time is really unfortunate :( It just points out how hopelessly bad modern software is - everyone's gotten used to unnecessarily horrible performance :(

From what I've seen, new versions of VS make it clear that you aren't supposed to put functions that have side effects in the watch window, and will refuse to evaluate them if it thinks they do (and it's overzealous about it). Could see that extra checking slowing things down.
