Here is the rant I promised on arrogant, dismissive replies about software quality on Twitter, complete with several exhibits for your delight and amusement:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC-0tCy4P1U …

But yes, actually, RemedyBG _does_ let you type expressions into the watch window. So did Visual Studio 5! Parsing an expression and evaluating it is not difficult. It's not hard to make that run at 60fps. At all.
-
Have to admit, I never noticed this particular issue. My attention has been occupied with questions like, "why is the watch engine evaluating a comment or a '(' when I mouse over it" and "why does a single step take multiple seconds?"

The problem isn't stupidity or presumed stupidity. It's feigned loyalty to paymaster corporate overlords and a generalised fear of criticism. An unconscious panic at the possibility criticality could lead to a meritocracy revealing swathes of imposters avoiding accountability.
-
This is happening across all industries, fields and activities that provide opaque means of existing within bureaucracies without accountability and rigorousness. Programming/Software has been one of these since almost its infancy. Education is another. Journalism more recently.
