Wasn't the UI rendering pretty much software-driven back then too? =)

Never mind 400MHz PCs. There were decent debuggers on my 8MHz Atari system that could show local variables, registers and memory and single step faster than modern VS. Quite possibly faster than your WinXP box, too - and the debugger didn’t interfere with GUI events either.

Qbasic/quickbasic had a surprisingly pleasant debugger, too, and was fine on a 486. I wonder if there's any sort of family relation between that and VS, through the visualBasic IDE?
