I have a question about N95 respirators I was hoping someone could answer for me [1/2]: If, as I've read, nearly all medical facilities don't have sufficient stockpiles of N95's, what exactly were they planning to do if there was an actual catastrophic event?

I think the only conclusions is that there was no plan.

This. Or I suspect that the powers that be couldn’t see the reason in stockpiling expensive equipment for something that “probably won’t happen”

The plan was to fire the Pandemic Response Team in 2018 and "save money". You can't botch the execution of a plan if you don't have a plan in the first place <taps temple knowingly>

But Tom, that's an absurd comment and you know it. This is a per-facility thing, and either they had stockpiles or they didn't. If they'd had that in place prior to 2018, they'd still have it. There wasn't some big "destockpiling N95s" event that happened in 2018.

Imagine being the person in charge of a hospital's supplies. You can cut corners and not buy N95 masks and make your boss happy. If a pandemic happens, no one will blame you personally. Win/win

I think the stockpile has to be renewed every X years for the masks to work, so maybe they just stop caring?
-
But wouldn't you just _use_ the ones in your stockpile and replace them? Like N95s are used every day all over the world. So it's really a capacitor, not a stockpile, terminology-wise...

It's exactly like that, atm. The world is jit based, hoping that "all will be always ok". But we know well how that's far from reality. And here we are. Hope in a huge change for the future, otherwise we're pretty fucked up.

The simplest conclusion is that most hospital admins never thought our already in place local and national stockpiles would be insufficient. From my perspective there seems to have been almost no forethought on this matter, and the little there was simply isn't enough.

Because "you don't even have money for X but you have enough masks to last 25 years?"
-
But the only _actual_ cost is the storage space. You are still using the same number of masks every month out of your stockpile, you just bought an extra 6 months _at some point_. It's just prepaying for the same number of them, right.
