I have a question about N95 respirators I was hoping someone could answer for me [1/2]: If, as I've read, nearly all medical facilities don't have sufficient stockpiles of N95's, what exactly were they planning to do if there was an actual catastrophic event?

[2/2] Because I can't wrap my head around the "don't hoard N95s" messaging. Like if the plan was "if there's a catastrophe, we'll just tell the public not to buy stuff and then we'll buy it on the open market", that seems absolutely insane, yet that seems the only conclusion?

For profit companies don’t see an ROI on stockpiling.

The UKs NHS also has PPE shortage. The problem as far as I can tell is that finance people have over years dogmatically implemented JIT inventory systems in just about every business, including those with critical functions, trading efficiency in optimal conditions for redundancy

And it's been cut to the bones by successive tory governments too. Poor foresight for the short term political gains.

Its not just 'catastrophic' event. If an event were local, they could source from neighboring regions. If it were shortlived, stockpile doesn't need to be that big. Current case is *global* and will soon be long, sustained need - 24/7 for months. No one stockpiled for worst case

It's a re-run of 2008: "it would only be a problem if all hospitals in the US were to hit a catastrophic event at around the same time, and what are the odds of _that_?"

we will keep getting taught the lesson that optimizing all slack out of a system does not fare well in the presence of problems until we finally get it
