I think it's important to maybe push less for specific things and more just push for a general understanding that we are still in a world of tradeoffs. Unity has a lot of really severe problems. That doesn't mean it's always the wrong choice.

There are many options (open source engine, roll your own, Unreal, Unity, GameMaker, RPG Maker, etc., etc.), and which one is the right choice for a project is a really hard thing to guess ahead of time unless you are very proficient at one of them and not at any other :)

I think it would be best if people just start acknowledging that there is not a right answer here. It's bad for people to insist that Unity is the "right choice", because it's often not. It's also very bad for people to insist it's not the right choice, because sometimes it is :)

The only thing that I think one can say with certainty is that the more you know about serious game programming, the better equipped you will be to make good decisions here, and the better you will be at navigating whatever path you choose. So study up, folks :)
