I think it's important to maybe push less for specific things and more just push for a general understanding that we are still in a world of tradeoffs. Unity has a lot of really severe problems. That doesn't mean it's always the wrong choice.

I think it would be best if people just start acknowledging that there is not a right answer here. It's bad for people to insist that Unity is the "right choice", because it's often not. It's also very bad for people to insist it's not the right choice, because sometimes it is :)

The only thing that I think one can say with certainty is that the more you know about serious game programming, the better equipped you will be to make good decisions here, and the better you will be at navigating whatever path you choose. So study up, folks :)

I have been working professionally for years in Unreal. Understanding what happens under the hood is actually (contrary to what some say) usually a time saver even with these tools. This "not inventing the wheel business is complete rubbish".

Unity's closed source nature is exactly bad for that reason. Because you can't even use it to learn anything but Unity. Why did no one mention Godot btw? It would probably require custom optimisations but it's accesible and open source and is gaining a lot of traction lately.
