I actually think there's a bit more to this than just "use Unity or make our own". Really I think devs just need to make sure they learn low-level programming to a certain extent _either way_, because I keep seeing things like this: https://scrap-paper-dev.itch.io/scrap-snow-story …

And I see a lot of really bad bugs in Unity games, performance issues, etc., and that just suggests to me that it's not that possible to use Unity and know literally nothing about how it works under the hood, because it rapidly spirals out of control.

So the more important thing, I think, is that people need to learn more about how game engines work whether they write their own or not, because we just aren't at a place yet where people can do serious game development without knowing how engines work to some reasonable degree.

I've also seen the same thing with Electron, etc., so this is not really a Unity-specific issue.
