Is there a reference for ASP somewhere that explains that? It definitely has quarter-pixel mocomp, but I suppose it could only have bilinear or something. But I don't see any obvious Google results that suggest it doesn't have the normal qpel filters...

ASP has qpel with a mix of 6-tap and 8-tap filters but it's somewhat underspecified (internal rounding is up to impl IIRC) and uses different filters at different positions.

For a regular 16-pixel macroblock, a 6-tap filter would need an extra 5 pixels, and 8-tap an extra 7. ASP never fetches those, just the 1 extra you need for the half-pel bilinear. The pixels outside that range are made up by reflecting the fetched samples along the edge.
