Well there's an impression that Uber is a wealthy tech company and it should share its wealth with drivers via healthcare, retirement, etc. I don't think the argument is really about contractor status per se.

I'm certainly sympathetic to the argument that tech execs should be paid less because they simple aren't worth it, but that is very different from suggesting that somehow it would make a substantial difference in their workers' wages (it basically never would).

Exactly this. The naive argument of “pay execs less so your company can give healthcare to its employees” isn’t an actual solution.
