Very frustrating to see web teams bragging about programming the way we told them to back when they were constantly claiming native coders were wrong about how to program. You could have just listened and done this 10+ years ago? #FUSVhttps://engineering.fb.com/data-infrastructure/messenger/ …

"Compilers will get smarter and fix all this in 10 years" "So you're saying in the next 10 years they'll be 10x smarter than they have been in the last 50 years?" I mean *sometimes* this happens in *some* specific areas, but it's incredibly dumb to actually assume it will.

Guys. You realize that this is likely to be 💯 ok, right? Like it’s not that all the smarties are in a camp and all the dumb ppl in another...

Messenger started as a web only part of facebook. I don’t know if ppl back then said that they should be C++ but said ppl would have been obviously wrong. Then they added an app. What would you have done? Rewrite it! Considering that the web thing was still the primary platform?

Not a huge fan of Casey's tone, but some of the old choices were fairly o_O whatever the language choice. 40 contact variants? Also the ”complete rewrite" sounds like unnecessary heroics and a very risky way to make such a change.

And I'm not a huge fan of having to deal with endless threads of people complaining that I'm teaching people how to program wrong, only to then have them end up programming that way once they realize their codebase is a gigantic flaming turd.

First of all. Programming right or wrong is not an intrinsic quality. It's based on product fitness. Nobody cares if your app/game/os/whatever is coded in the worst style ever, if it works great and you keep delivering. This also means that I really don't know how one can judge..

...any code from the outside, without knowing the product, the team, the history and their goals. Ostensibly, messenger is a very, VERY successful product, so starting from there one, without other evidence, must at least have the humility of thinking they were not entirely dumb
