Other than just wanting to be able to copy other people's work as they often do all the time anyway, I'm not sure I understand major tech giants' argument as to why APIs would not be copyrightable. They are, if anything, much harder to make well than their implementations.

So that's compiled binaries though and implementation. A public API is just that, a public API, if you dont want people to copy that then dont release it publicly. If that means that reduces who can use your software then so be it

Personally I really struggle with software patents and that type of thing, it's too easy to completely stifle an ecosystem, or to blindly fall foul of an obvious solution to a problem which has already been monetized
