I literally had to optimize a piece of JavaScript code today that was trying to set the state of a grid of 128x128 elements _once_, something that you wouldn't even think about in C, but which took _two seconds_ to do in JavaScript because it is amazing and wonderful.

That sounds weird. Sure JavaScript is not fast by C standards, but you should be able to pull a few hundred million operations per second.

I mean the sad part about the whole thing is I originally typed in 256x256, but that wouldn't even load in the browser, basically. It ground to a halt on my i9. No JS, just 65536 static elements on an HTML page is way into the HTML 7.0+ timeframe for feasibility, apparently.

Here's how bananas that is. In a perfectly normal 8x8 pixel font, there's about that many characters on my rather pedestrian monitor. NOPE - too difficult.

Most likely when you ground to a halt in a situation like that it is because of layout calculations. Whenever you change something the whole thing may reflow, even if nothing actually moves.

No, there were no layout events. The problem is just that certain DOM accesses are very slow, and you just can't make that many of them. You can see all this happening in the Performance tab of Chrome.

You can also fall off the fast past pretty easily. Every time you do something, you have a chance that that thing is not what someone was expecting you to do, and then that can tank the entire thing :(

I keep trying to find a good "why" for all this, and I think it all boils down to trivia. In a parallel universe, we all use Visual Basic to modify & present MS Word documents on the web.https://www.reddit.com/r/javascript/comments/6115ay/why_do_developers_think_the_dom_is_slow/?utm_source=amp&utm_medium=&utm_content=post_body …

The DOM should not be a general computing environment, and the people who most defend it seem to be those who fall in love with the trivia.
