Someday, in the distant future, humans will finally develop sufficiently advanced technology to have credit cards which don't need to be manually updated everywhere every five years when they perpetually "expire".

I wonder if it's more of a physical thing like the card not working 100% of the time due to years of wear on the strip or the chip.
-
That would be a reason to periodically send you a new card, not a reason to make you change your CC info at every place that currently charges it remotely (obviously without the strip or chip, because they never had those things).

Practically the only way to cancel PlayStation Network is to have a card lapse. Much simpler

Probably in case the credentials /have/ leaked in that period, but haven't been abused. Allows the cards to expire naturally if they aren't disposed of properly. Maybe if they are steadily used, their duration could be extended, a la 'refresh token'? Uncertain.

Nowadays, generating virtual cards tied to a backing line of credit might be a simpler option, and might open the door towards not needing external credentials at all.
