I feel like teaching students at university that programming is OOP is doing them a disservice and either setting them up for a lot of relearning or worse setting them up for never learning programming in a completely basic way.

I can obviously see that you can't put the cart before the horse, and need to teach them in a way they understand. But I can't see how OOP is making any of those things easier.

I don't need to know about interfaces and abstract classes in the OOP sense before I know about why I need them. Why not teach in a more general sense why polymorphism can be good and forget about the cruft of seemingly random Java boilerplate.

I say all this because I was reading the course structure of CS at my former university in Aarhus, and knowing what I know now, I feel like I wasted years not knowing how to actually program, but rather how to piece together OOP concepts like design patterns.

Again, I know that you have to teach basics before you can teach advanced things, but I am convinced that OOP is anything but basic, and it is taught as the be-all end-all of programming. There's so much in OOP that is irrelevant to just programming.

I would argue 100% of OOP is irrelevant to programming.

maybe if you don't have to work with existing code bases
