As we come into 2020, I am now pretty sure I picked the wrong career. If I had known what computers were going to become, I probably wouldn't have wanted to be a programmer. It is definitely no longer a career for people who take pride in their work.

The fact that there is a lot of good actual science out there is hardly something that helps, because citizens don't have personal experience with, say, astronomy or the LHC. They remember that the entire medical community told them eating cholesterol was bad and carbs were good.

One last thought on this. You're saying that because of some poor science (the sole example of which that you can provide being nutrition, which I agree is bunk) .: the *entire community* is solely at fault, and the scientifically illiterate among us are entirely off the hook...
