The Sistine chapel was painted on commission from the church, and he put God and Adam in it. So I don't know. I guess I'm saying is that even in a commercial or commissioned work of art where you are using licensed characters, there can still be real art there as well.

I think e.g. the directors of most marvel movies cared about making the most baller movie they could within the parameters they had (like Michelangelo.. he wasn't going to put Thor up there, or do anything that alienated the public).

And even by that criteria it doesn't explain why a sculpture of some random Caesar is called art when it's basically just a profile pic of the time. We appreciate the excellent execution, regardless of monetary or other motives.
