someone linked me an article from 2008 that describes a version of the gpu method that "actually works" by rendering to 1x1 viewports and using the depth buffer to get the max in each direction... https://www.gamedev.net/articles/programming/graphics/computation-of-bounding-primitives-on-the-gpu-r2582/ … so this stupid idea apparently did come from *somewhere*
apparently these people live in a world where there's zero latency in sending data to and from the gpu
