And while I'm on the subject, our modern computer "science" dogma about "clean code", "elegance" or generally "how to program properly" could also have this exact critique leveled at it nearly verbatim.

Yikes - citation required! All my medical parents were taught about the very severe limits of nutritional science, and this is reinforced whenever MEDICAL guidance is given. Completely correct that most stuff in books about nutrition is bollocks. Like... er... that one.

Having read countless nutrition "science" papers myself, it is very clear that there is no such attitude whatsoever. If you claim they are thoroughly taught this in school, then I guess they forget it later? Or maybe something about nutrition science filters out rigorous people.

Absolutely. Unless your doctor is a mechanic (ie surgeon etc) what they’re telling you is often decades out of date, completely untethered from research, and just a glorified version of the duct tape vs WD40 flow chart.
-
Obviously there are doctors where this isn’t true. :)

I had a similar thought along the lines of "well, physics could stand to be improved too", but in terms of relative magnitude, I'm still on board with the quote. At least until physics rigor degrades to the point where it is no longer true at all, which of course could happen.

If I am interested in good nutritional science, where should I go? I would love to read about it, as it is a fascinating topic. I'm a layman though, so I might need my nutrition(science) fed with a teaspoon.
-
I suggest the pragmatic approach: put theory aside and look at the people who are doing well. Ggl "blue zones". But never forget the grain of salt.

Here’s a great takedown of nutrition’s failure, just in case you haven’t come across it yet: https://meaningness.com/nutrition Includes the history.
