For future reference, I have a new auto-block rule: if you've filed a software patent and I hear about it, you're blocked. Software patents are still the most indefensible type of patent (among many), and it boils my blood any time I see one. (https://caseymuratori.com/blog_0027 )

I have a few things to say. First, I agree with you. Second, patents have always been bad (see Wight bros vs airspace industry). I have a few ideas how to fix patents...

Tax patents like real estate. Patent holders should state value of their patents, and both taxes and damages should be based on this value.

The problem is, if you don’t patent in the current system, you end up being litigated by someone who goes and patents your tech first As long as the system exists surely it will be impossible to stop people filing defensively like this?

You are welcome to file defensively if you then publicly post that you will not sue anyone except in a defensive fashion. But almost nobody does that, they just _claim_ that that is why they're doing it.

One of the most awesome software patents ever is the Renderman patent where the Reyes algorithm is beautifully explained. The patent is no longer in effect and everyone can use it. 20 something years is not a long time. Most patents are less defensible.

I thought the problem in modern society was that people want to block free speech from a political point of view that they find distasteful. It's sad to see clever people fall to this zeitgeist trap.

It's different thing if you want to block pure idiots but categorically ignoring a segment of population utilizing a common legal mechanism is a surprisingly puritanical view from you, given I value you very much as a communicator.

I remember looking into font rendering when I started working on my own game engine and discovering there are parents on subpixel rendering. To me that sounds about as insane as if you patented array indexing.

More recently I've been looking into video codecs to avoid h.264 patents. Thankfully VP9 looks like it's probably better technically as well as having a free patent license.
