I can't speak Japanese, but I know a bit from having studied it (I took an extremely bad class at a community college night school near my apartment). I recently saw Duolingo had added Japanese and tried it, and I actually quite like it for learning Kanji (I don't love Wanikani).
Basically right now my reading skills are significantly hampered by not knowing Kanji, but I've found with Duolingo it sticks better than with other things I've tried (probably because they are given to you in context).
Though I haven't tried Duolingo, I've being learning new Kanji. (Basic) Grammar and Kana were the easy part... Maybe I'll give it a shot.
