There isn't even a remotely comparable open source alternative. Reaper is arguably one of the best applications I've ever seen in any domain.

Also, I prefer to pay for software when it is done well. Reaper has very fair license terms and no DRM, and has been a pleasure to use for many years. I very much prefer to pay them for their hard work :)

You forgot one very important aspect of the feature: the user has to pay $50 to buy the key themselves when they are "upgrading" to a new version of Handmade Hero that uses it (here's looking at you, Ivory!)
