You forgot one very important aspect of the feature: the user has to pay $50 to buy the key themselves when they are "upgrading" to a new version of Handmade Hero that uses it (here's looking at you, Ivory!)

To be exact, open source doesn't necessarily imply gratis. With Ardour, you have to pay for official builds and updates. I like that approach, since a big chunk of the userbase will probably not be able or want to build from the source regularly.

What makes Reaper so much superior to Ardour? Genuinely curious, I've used Ardour for a while (mostly happily, but I have some gripes), but never tried Reaper.
