A tech director can watch a bit of people's streams, and they can bookmark people who look promising for later even if they don't yet seem ready, etc. It just seems like there's a lot of potential here for a new hiring pipeline that is more fair and useful for everyone.

(And I guess "junior hire" is an ambiguous term here - I suppose I mind "blind hires", as in you didn't go recruit somebody from another team - they don't need to be junior, I suppose...)

Yeah I'd still hate that. I'd rather people don't watch me program, you don't want to see how the sausage is made :P
-
Agreed, but not because I'd want to hide anything, somebody "potentially watching" me (even later) is just as anxiety-inducing as sweating in front of a white board, some people are simply not made for "live performances".

That vaguely saddens me, I don't stream because I am uncomfortable with my voice, but I wouldn't want to lose opportunities like that

I hope not. I've done programming streams before and I couldn't work properly knowing people were watching everything I was doing. I wouldn't want to be judged by a potential employer on my ability to program on a livestream. That's more unnatural pressure than an interview IMO.
-
Not to mention you already have to split your attention between your design notes/todos, code, debug views and perhaps old revisions... Adding viewer chat on top of that is the last thing you need.

This is a tough one for me. Supposing I couldn't code at work on stream for NDA reasons, if I were someone who didn't have time to stream in their own time, it would put me at a distinct disadvantage. Similar to requiring extra coding or open source.

Besides, success at the traditional whiteboard interview correlates highly with job success. It means the one can discuss, design, and code. Yes, it generates false negatives, but I'd rather that than hire a good programmer that can't collaborate.

I hope this never happens. the way you program in your own time will differ greatly from how you program in a professional setting.
