One of my most controversial software opinions is that your sleep quality and stress level matter far, far more than the languages you use or the practices you follow. Nothing else comes close: not type systems, not TDD, not formal methods, not ANYTHING. Allow me to explain why.

I am a huge advocate of always getting a good night sleep! I can very clearly tell the difference getting even one hour less sleep. There are still over a hundred hours in the week after getting a solid 8 a night.

The key word here being "probably". It's your bias and assumption, but you have no idea.

Except you can’t take that conclusion past the two of you. Michael Phelps could stay up for three days binging nachos and still swim faster than either of us. That result definitely does not say that sleep deprivation and junk food are good for swimming.

But that does mean that being Michael Phelps is a bigger net gain for swimming than staying up for three days binging nachos is a net negative.

Which is really useful, if “just be Michael Phelps” is your strategy for self improvement. The rest of us need to eliminate natural ability as a factor in understanding how to improve.

"Don't take swimming advice from Michael Phelps, because excellent swimmers know less about how to improve at swimming than people who are relatively poor swimmers"?

Not what I said in the slightest. Take his advice, absolutely, but also recognize that his personal experience is impacted by his natural ability. Related: his own coaches are likely worse swimmers than he is. Think he ignores their input?
