To the folks who recommended @TransferWise for paying UK taxes: it _almost_ worked, but unfortunately the payment reference field in their transfer form does not accept the forward slash character, which HMRC requires as part of the tax payment reference :( So it cannot be used.

I'm not exactly sure why they ended up making a money transfer service that _doesn't_ allow punctuation in the reference field, since punctuation is _often_ used in the reference field for official payments, but I guess they just... didn't? I don't know :(

Update: I spoke with TransferWise on the phone, and they are actually trying to manually update this for us, so I can at least vouch for their support staff - they are very helpful!

That’s the sign of a company who gets it... in my experience their web forms have been incredibly adequate when wiring to many countries (as opposed to the pretty much useless forms of my local banks).

Not to mention the government itself. Trying to pay taxes through @HMRCgovuk has been one of the most grotesque misadventures I have ever had the extreme displeasure of experiencing. It's horrible. Anyone who complains about the IRS in the US doesn't know how good they have it.

My wife has being bullied by HMRC for months.. randomly claimed she owed them 37k£ (that’s like 3 times what she made that year) without explanation of why/how, “pay first and fill a complain later”.. sure... it’s maybe being resolved now but we still have no explanation for it.

Would love to see the embarrassing backdown from HMRC if it ever got as far as court proceedings for an issue that is clearly borne out of their own error.. that however is stress that absolutely nobody needs :-/
