I randomly learned Emacs on DOS instead of vi due to pure chance, so I grew up on Emacs. I wish I'd learned vi, since now that I've done a lot of editor design and worked out what I think the "right" way is to do things, vi is clearly a much better base than Emacs for pro use.

There are some core ideas in the vi design that I think are backwards, but probably because when vi was developed, there was no "instant feedback" possibility like there is on today's machines. So they wouldn't have realized there was a strong reason to invert things.
