I wonder if it was easier just to binary patch the clang exe to find the linker..

In part we have MS to thank for how hard it is to locate and deal with visual studio locations (though, why clang is abiding it without also providing a commandline arg I have no idea): Check this out for fun read -https://github.com/Microsoft/vswhere/issues/143 …

And you probably already know of it, but
@Jonathan_Blow and company created a simplified version (400 lines) of that very same vswhere project (8000 lines). https://pastebin.com/3YvWQa5c This is code for locating vs installations. It's all just astounding.

I recommend trying lld-link. Chrome is shipping binaries linked with it. I think it is ready for production use. (-fuse-ld=lld)

Thanks, I'll give it a try. It would definitely be nice not to have to do the path shenanigans :)

For what it's, the kinds of things Handmade Hero spends most of its time on, I feel like I could more or less figure out myself given enough time, but whenever stuff related to linkers and compiler settings fails to work, I feel pretty helpless.

I don't know if there's a systematic way to teach that kind of thing, but if there were it would be very helpful.

I've been meaning to write the same kind of blog post for a while now. Thanks for sharing because now I don't have to :D The best part was that I managed to use an openMP version on Windows which should have been incompatible
